Rick Kelly - Cry Baby (1988)

From The Lost Record Covers Club

With two friends I had a label in the late 80's. It was called Blue Moves. The original idea was to issue existing albums on CD and capitalise on how the major labels were only concentrating on the main sellers and forgetting the quality lower selling albums that they had in their vaults.  Time has proved that it was a good idea but, with no track record and little funding our enterprise couldn't afford to license the stuff we were after (much of it featured in this blog).

A good friend and ex-colleague knew Rick Kelly from the West Coast.  Rick was making a name for himself from his session work but from also writing and producing the Jets US hit single "I Do You".  He loved the idea of breaking in the UK first.  This was issued as a CD single in addition to 7" and 12" versions.  We managed to get a good reception and plays on the commercial stations across the country but over too long a period to have any significant impact on sales.  We got some press and a few fair reviews.  There was no real follow-up although I have some demos of songs that were works in progress.

We had one other signing in the band Pop Art who again were from the West Coast but the original idea of the label was lost in the excitement that we may be finding "the" artist.  The releases were good and I'm proud to think that we did it without any real marketing, A+R or legal experience.  It was fun whilst it lasted but reality kicked in and we all went back to our day jobs.

This is a bit Pet Shop Boys like with a half spoken vocal but it's catchy and ran with the big boys for a few weeks in the spring/summer of  '88 which was pretty cool.
